                     Cats And Play

It is difficult to think about cats, so graceful and
lithe, without also thinking about their playfulness.
The sight of a small kitten leaping and pouncing side-
ways onto a ball, her eyes round and surprised, makes
us laugh. A quiet reverie of book reading is disturbed
by a feline pet batting a paper clip across the room.
Feline play behavior is adorable and endearing - and
of course, as cat owners can attest, quite frustrating
at times.

As common as it is, the reasons for play behavior are
not entirely understood. As with most mammalian species,
play is seen most frequently in the young. Among other
things, it is believed to serve as “practice” for social
and predatory behaviors that will be critical later in
life. Researchers have found that kittens begin to play
at approximately four weeks, spending most of their time
playing with each other at this young age. Wrestling
with other kittens helps shape the skills needed to
establish social systems with other mature cats later.
By the age of seven to eight weeks, kittens transfer
their attention from such social play to predatory play
with inanimate objects.

With all the importance that play holds in the life of
a young cat, it is perhaps no surprise that inapprop-
riate or excessive play is a common behavior problem.
Seen most frequently in young kittens and juvenile cats,
play-related aggression can be a troubling problem.
Their human “prey” complain of cats pouncing on feet as
they walk by, or otherwise biting, clawing and kicking
while they are being handled or petted. Although there
is no “vicious” intent in such kittens or cats, all of
this carousing can be painful. Another risk of play-
related aggression in cats is cat scratch disease, a
bacterial infection resulting from cat scratches which
can affect anyone with compromised immunity.

               Play-Related Aggression

What can be done about play-related aggression? This
common problem is actually quite easy to treat and
resolve. First, remember that kittens and cats need to
play. By writing down the general times and patterns
of your own cat’s play, you should be able to predict
the times or situations in which she is likely to
“attack.” Provide toys (homemade toys are fine!) such
as feathers or cloth strips dangling from sticks,
catnip-filled mice, or bells and wind-up toys. A bucket
filled with crumpled paper or Ping-Pong balls is a very
useful distracter, placed in areas where the kitten has
previously stalked and pounced on assorted feet: as she
starts to stalk, throw a ball down the stairs for her.
Punishment, in the form of a water gun, may be useful
if necessary, but redirection of her play-aggression
will be more convincing to your cat. Because some
kittens start to bite and kick playfully while they
are being petted, it may help to limit the duration of
petting until your kitten matures a little more.
Finally, feeding the main part of your cat’s daily
diet at a time he otherwise might be attacking your
ankles can greatly reduce the aggression.

Would another kitten in the home solve the problem?
Well, it might - but it might not. If you have already
decided to add another cat to your home, now is the
time to do it; two kittens will often keep each other
physically occupied. But if the decision is based
entirely on reducing your current cat’s play-aggression,
it may not be a good enough reason to obtain a second
cat. Remember - the problem may not improve, and you
might end up with two predators instead of one!

                        Posture:

The way a cat holds her body must be observed along with
signs from the tail, ears, eyes, voice, and fur (including
whiskers) to correctly find out what your cats emotional
state is. A cat who enjoys being petted from head to toe
often arches her back to maximize contact with your hand.
in another situation an arched back may mean you shouldn,t
even go near her cause you might get hurt.

Here are three positions of a cat and what they mean:

Inquisitive - The friendly and curious cat is relaxed,
moving forward comfortably with tail up. Ears are up, too,
and slightly pointed to the sides.

Defensive - A cat who’s just angry or scared arches her back
and puffs out her fur in the classic “Halloween cat” pose.

Aggressive - A cat who’s going to attack crouches low, his
back a little higher than his front, ready to put his
powerful hind legs to use in a leap forward. the fur over
his shoulders is up, as is the fur on his tail. This cat
means business; back away and let him be!

A cat in an aggressive or defensive posture, is best to be
left alone. Even if he’s your cat, give him time to chill

                 POISONOUS CHEMICALS
 
Since it’s the season when most homes may have mice prob-
lems I thought it would be a good idea to touch on this.
The dangers of using Decon for this problem when cats are
present in the home. If the cat eats some or most of the
mouse who has died from eating Decon there is a risk that
this can be toxic and deadly to the cat.
                    
This is not at all an inclusive list of poisonous chemicals,
but is the most frequently ingested in the cat crowd. Many
of these chemicals are used to control vermin and insects,
and because your cat will unhesitatingly eat either of
these, he may consume the drug second hand. Rat poison can
be Strychnine, Sodium Fluroacetate (1080), Metaldehyde,
Phosphorus, Arsenic, Zinc Phosphide, Decon, Warfarin, and
Pindone. Add to this list, food poisoning, lead poisoning,
drinking antifreeze (they love the stuff) and the accidental
ingestion of human drugs and your symptoms all look pretty
similar:  

Hyperactivity

Vomiting

Staggering

Heavy Breathing

Seizures and Convulsions

Diarrhea or severe constipation

Tremors

Collapse and even Coma  

Your cat may exhibit one or all of these symptoms. Treat
poisoning by these chemicals by inducing vomiting and
then coat the bowels and delay absorption as indicated in
POISONING. These are only temporary measures and you should
get your cat to a Veterinarian as quickly as possible. Many
poisons result in long lasting problems usually affecting
the liver and or kidneys. This is why it is so important
to remove the toxins from the body as quickly as possible.

            Attempting to give Your Cat Meds…..
 
Now that the flu season is upon us, we not only have to watch
out for ourselves but also for our pets so they don’t get
sick. But if they should, here are a few tips to keep in mind
when giving your cat medicine.

                         PILL MEDS

Most people try the sneak method, trying to disguise the pill
in a bit of something yummy in hopes that the cat won’t notice
the pill inside. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn’t.

Another way is the pill gun (sold in pet stores). These plas-
tic devices enable you to put the pill on the top and then
press in against your cat’s throat. I find it easiest to
open my cat’s mouth with one hand and shoot the pill into
his throat, this seems to work for me.

                       LIQUID MEDS

For liquid medications ask your vet for a syringe with the
needle removed. The measurements are marked on the sides
for easy dosage. An eye dropper will work too!

                     EAR MEDICATION

Lay a towel across your lap and talk gently and rub your
pets ear gently to relax him/her. Apply the ear drops and
gently rub the ear again to make sure the medicine goes
in the ear.

                      EYE MEDICATIONS

To use eye meds restrain your pet and gently apply a line
of the ointment from the tube across the length of your
cats eye being careful not to touch the eye itself. if it’s
drops try to place them in the center of the eye. Close the
eyelid and let the medication move around the eye.

           Things To Always Keep IN Mind
 
1. Have A Plan - Prepare for all possibilities, including
that you might be away from home when a disaster strikes.
Make sure someone your close with has a copy of your pets
records (shots, the Vet you use, and the type of food
he/she eats). Make sure everyone (including the kids) are
prepared in the event of an emergency.  Make a plan and go
over it until everyone knows their part and what to do.

2. Corral Your Cat - Of course you won’t know when a
disaster is going to happen but if you hear of a Tornado
warning or something like that where you have advanced
warning, keep your pet close to you at all times and
know where he/she is.

3. Maintain Your Cat’s ID  -  Most animals always survive
a disaster but never see their families again. This happens
because there isn’t anyway to determine which pet belongs
to which family. Pets should always wear a collar with an
ID tag attached. A collar and ID can save your pets life.

4. Keep Health Records Current

5. Have Restraints Ready - Even normally laid-back cats can
freak out under stress. If you don’t want to get bitten or
clawed keep a restraint handy. If you need to hold onto a
cat in an emergency, grab hold of him behind the neck in a
grasp the Vets call “scruffing”.

                  Flying With Your Cat…..

Before flying with your cat, take the necessary steps
to be fully prepared. Many necessities for air travel
can be addressed long before leaving the ground.
 
Book tickets according to seasonal temperature
variances. Most airlines do not have temperature
